Basil the ultimate herb for cooking and health
Known since ages. It’s name derives from the ancient Greek word basileus, which means “king”. Because of its unique fragrance, it employed the scholars more then any other medicinal plant. The Greek physician Dioskurides wrote as early as the first century, “Basil has a purifying effect on the head” so the plant contains a substance that makes good mood. Presumably, in nine of ten kitchens, basil can be found. And not only because of its culinary importance, but also because basil leaves small pest spirits such as flies and mosquitoes in the summer days. You can grow all kinds of basil yourself such as -Thai basil -Greek bush basil -basil with purple leaves or -ordinary basil.
Basil health benefits
Many diseases or minor ailments are reduced or even cured by the basil, because of its ingredients. Basil has an antibacterial effect, strengthens the immune system, protects the heart and circulation, helps the body with infections, relieves inflammation caused by osteoarthritis, helps with depression and reduces headaches and migraines. It not only soothes the nervous system but also the stomach and intestines.
Basil as tee
To use basil as a healing tee remedy, it is prepared as a tea from dried leaves. For this you pour a teaspoon of basil leaves in a cup of boiling water. Let the tea soak for ten minutes. For coughing it is helpful to sweeten the tea with a little honey.

Mix freshly chopped basil with butter, pepper and grated lemon zest and cool. This fantastic herb butter is perfect for roast lamb, fish dishes and on toast.
To make a refreshing drink, you need the juice of one lemon, eight to ten basil leaves and one liter of water. The ingredients are mixed well and ideally enjoyed chilled. It works best with a smoothie mixer.
Cold basil zucchini soup
To make a delicious soup out of zucchini with the help of basil, you only need ingredients that can be found in every kitchen.
7 small to medium sized zucchini, sliced
1 cup fresh basil leaves
about 3 tablespoons of olive oil
3 medium-sized, chopped onions
5 chopped garlic cloves
5-6 cups of water Salt, pepper, parsley
Fry onions and garlic in olive oil, add the zucchini and sauté. Then add the water and cook until the zucchini are tender. Season with salt and pepper and then mix in parsley and basil. After cooling, store in the refrigerator. You can also grow basil on the windowsill or in the garden. Either you grow the plants from seed, or you grow a branch big. The plant needs a dry, sunny location. If the temperatures in the open are constantly above 10 degrees Celsius, you can put the plants on the balcony or the terrace.
